What is persistence?
Persistence is the quality of continuing to do something despite difficulties or delays in achieving success. It’s often seen as a key trait in achieving long-term goals and overcoming obstacles.
For example, someone who keeps working towards a goal despite repeated failures demonstrates persistence. It’s about maintaining effort and focus, even when progress seems slow or challenges arise.
Over time, the term evolved through Old French into Middle English as “persistence,” retaining its core meaning of continuing steadfastly despite challenges.
For example, a persistent person might keep trying to solve a problem even after multiple failures, or a persistent disease might keep affecting someone despite treatment efforts.
It often has a positive connotation, implying resilience and determination, but it can also suggest an annoying or unwelcome quality if someone is persistently intrusive or bothersome.
